On Knowing

I don’t know
is what we say
when we do but we’re scared, or
we've stopped listening to ourselves.

I don’t know how
is what we say
when we doubt the step we know is next.

I don’t know when
is what we say
when we waited and the energy
fell away

like a wave
it went on without us,
rising and falling
under all of our I-don’t-knows.

We don’t need to know
how or when or why
to trust the waves will carry us.

One after another
gentle hands will pass us
all the way to the shore.
