Where Hope Is

Today the world is too big
and me, too small in it.
The people, too many,
the problems, too complex,
my heart
too heavy to hold it.

Where is hope when you need it?
What coat does it wear,
who weaves it?
Who hears it beating
deep beneath the snow?

What atrocity, to feel hopeless
for more than a minute or two.
The ones I love will live
long into these problems.
I refuse to abandon them here.
I will not leave.

Here is hope, if you need it.
I’m out here too,
wielding what I can;
heart like a cloak,
calling forth life
from the snow.
